The use of IoT (Internet of Things) devices equipped with wireless modules has been rapidly expanding, and the antennas embedded in these devices are required to achieve miniaturization while maintaining sufficient performance. However, antenna miniaturization often leads to degradation of characteristics such as radiation efficiency and operating bandwidth, making it challenging to satisfy the required specifications. In this study, electrically small folded antennas much shorter than the wavelength, namely the folded inverted-L antenna (FILA) and the folded meander line antenna (FMLA), are investigated. The radiation efficiency under bandwidth enhancement is clarified through numerical analysis and experimental measurements. In addition, theoretical values of radiation efficiency are derived using an equivalent circuit and compared with both simulation and measurement results. It was found that the radiation efficiency of both FILA and FMLA exceeds 90% at the center frequency. Furthermore, when comparing the frequency ranges where the radiation efficiency is greater than 80%, FILA shows agreement within 5%, whereas FMLA exhibits a difference of approximately 10%. |
