The increasing power consumption of wireless communication systems, particularly in mobile terminals and base stations, has become a critical issue with the advancement of high-speed and large-capacity wireless communication technologies.
High-resolution Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) are major contributors to this power consumption.
Therefore, minimizing the power consumption of ADCs is a crucial challenge for realizing energy-efficient communication systems.
To address this issue, this study focuses on utilizing 1-bit ADCs, which minimize power consumption and circuit complexity due to their extremely low quantization resolution.
However, 1-bit ADCs are inherently non-linear devices, making it impossible to directly apply to conventional signal processing designed for linear systems.
To overcome this challenge, we investigate a novel receiver architecture that leverages stochastic resonance (SR) phenomena.
When noise is added to the received signals, SR is then induced, which enables signal recovery even from the output of 1-bit ADCs.
We evaluated the Bit Error Rate (BER) performance of 1-bit ADC reception of (2times2) Space-Time Block Coded (SFBC) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) system through experiments.
Where MIMO-OFDM signals and noises were generated by a signal generator and wide-band noise generators, respectively.
This evaluation quantitatively demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed SR-based 1-bit ADC reception for achieving reliable communication with significantly reduced power consumption. |
