Evaluating the Impact of Response Latency in Avatar Mirror Images on Cross-Modality in Virtual Reality

(in English) In immersive virtual reality (VR), research has increasingly focused on enhancing presence and immersion. However, little is known about how variations in response time within VR environments affect these experiential qualities. The present study investigates the effects of response delay by introducing unnatural delays in the mirrored avatar of a user within a VR space, thereby isolating the influence of response latency on cross-modal perception. Specifically, a VR environment was designed in which a user’s avatar and its mirror image were presented, with delays applied only to the mirrored avatar’s movements. Participants experienced five delay conditions ranging from 0 to 1.6 seconds and evaluated their impressions using the Igroup Presence Questionnaire (IPQ) with a seven-point Likert scale and a magnitude estimation method. The results suggest a potential correlation between response delay and the levels of presence and immersion experienced in VR.
