A VR-based investigation of the influence of conversation sound source location and direction on cognitive load while driving

(in English) Conversations while driving increase cognitive load and degrade driving performance, even when using a hands-free device. Previous research has focused on the presence or content of conversation, as well as the distance to the sound source. This study aimed to clarify the influence of the direction of a conversational audio source and the resulting shifts in spatial attention on driving performance within a VR driving simulator environment. The results of our analysis revealed a significant difference in reaction time based on the presence of a conversation, but no significant difference was found for the distance or direction of the audio source. These findings suggest that during conversations while driving, the cognitive load associated with linguistic processing outweighs the influence of spatial information processing, indicating that the effect of the audio source's direction on driving performance is limited.
