Comparison of ultrasound images of HIFU-induced cavitation bubbles enhanced by superimposing focused ultrasound pulses and high-speed camera images of cavitation bubbles

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Cavitation bubbles can improve treatment efficacy in high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) thermal therapy through their heating enhancement effects. To utilize these thermal effects efficiently, the bubble generation location must be properly controlled. We propose a method for highly sensitive imaging of cavitation bubbles by superimposing focused pulses from the HIFU transducer onto imaging pulses. This study evaluates the accuracy of bubble distributions obtained by the proposed method by comparing it with optical measurements using a high-speed camera. Specifically, it examines the effect of the pressure of the superimposed focused pulse on the brightness distribution in the depth direction of the ultrasound image. Furthermore, to reduce side lobes in the lateral direction, the coherence factor is applied to the proposed method, and its effectiveness is also investigated.
