This paper proposes an optical mode converter that enables scalable support for an increasing number of modes. Among various types of mode converters, reconstitution-type devices are capable of dynamically switching between modes; however, they have faced the limitation of supporting only a small number of modes. To address this issue, we present a method that enables mode conversion for an arbitrary number of modes by recursively expanding the device structure. The proposed device consists of multi-mode interferometer couplers, -????/2 phase shifters, and Y-junction waveguides. By hierarchically
combining fundamental two-mode conversion units, the number of modes can be exponentially increased while maintaining structural simplicity. Numerical simulations using the two-dimensional finite element method were conducted to optimize each component of the device. We further evaluated the performance of a four-mode converter and confirmed that accurate conversion into different higher-order modes is achieved depending on the input port. |
