Temperature Dependence Adjuster for Fabrication Errors in Athermal Mach-Zehnder Filters

(in English) The temperature dependence of the filter characteristics cannot be ignored in a wavelength locker for digital coherent applications using a silicon photonics chip. While it is possible to create a Mach–Zehnder filter with reduced temperature dependence by using waveguides with different refractive index temperature dependencies, fabrication errors could make it difficult to achieve the higher-precision characteristics of less than ±0.01 GHz/K required for TEC-free operation in future applications. In this paper, we propose a temperature dependence adjuster that uses an external signal after fabrication to compensate for residual temperature dependence that cannot be eliminated due to manufacturing variations. By simulating the proposed structure, we have confirmed that our device can sufficiently compensate for the residual temperature dependence of 0.17 GHz/K obtained from the fabricated device.
