Conventional receiver-initiated medium access control (MAC) protocols used in energy-harvesting wireless sensor networks require long periods of continuous listening to discover communication partners, which increases power consumption and undermines low-power operation. To address this limitation, we proposed the zero excess node MAC (ZEN-MAC) protocol. ZEN-MAC reduces idle listening by introducing low-power listening based on multistage beacons and clear channel assessment. Furthermore, it mitigates battery depletion by autonomously controlling intermittent listening intervals in a distributed manner, adapting to both harvested energy and neighboring communication activity. This paper demonstrates, through theoretical analyses and computer simulations, that ZEN-MAC enables ultra-low-power communications and presents its implementation on off-the-shelf microcomputers. |
