The transmission standard for 4K8K satellite broadcasting (ISDB-S3) in Japan has newly adopted APSK modulation schemes in addition to conventional PSKs. Since the launch of commercial broadcasting services in December 2018, 16APSK has been employed, enabling the transmission of one 8K program or three 4K programs per channel. Although APSKs enable higher spectral efficiency, it is more vulnerable to distortion. The typical satellite transponder consists of an input multiplexer (IMUX) filter, traveling wave tube amplifier (TWTA), and output multiplexer (OMUX) filter. Amplitude and group delay variations within the Nyquist bandwidth of the IMUX and OMUX filters induce linear distortion in the modulated signal, while gain compression and phase rotation caused by TWTA due to high power efficient operation induce nonlinear distortion. We have optimized transmission performance by considering the trade-off between the required C/N and output power of the satellite transponder, and proposed a compensation method using digital pre-distortion (DPD). Through computer simulations and transmission experiments, we have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed method in improving transmission performance. In this presentation, we present an overview of our previous work. |
