Nonlinear signal amplification using Hopf oscillators
Koya Yakushi, Tomoaki Niiyama, Satoshi Sunada (Kanazawa Univ.) CCS2025-52
Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) The human auditory system can perceive a wide range of sound intensities, a function achieved by outer hair cells that selectively amplify small vibrations. By mimicking this nonlinear amplification characteristic, it is expected that sensors capable of handling a broad range of signal intensities can be realized. In this study, using a mathematical model representing the function of outer hair cells as a Hopf oscillator receiving external input, we analyzed its responses under various conditions numerically. The results revealed that when the input is amplitude-modulated at the oscillator’s natural frequency, the amplification characteristics emerge. Furthermore, we show that coupling multiple Hopf oscillators generates diverse responses that cannot be obtained from a single oscillator.
