Candidate waveform for 6G Satellite Communications: Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM)

(in English) This paper investigates Affine Frequency Division Multiplexing (AFDM) as a potential additional waveform candidate for 6G radio, based on the 3GPP RAN1 Study Item on 6G Radio (6GR). AFDM utilizes the Discrete Affine Fourier Transform (DAFT) to diagonalize doubly dispersive channels in the delay–Doppler domain, providing inherent robustness under high mobility and non-terrestrial network (NTN) conditions. Simulation analyses indicate that AFDM offers up to 1.5 dB block error rate (BLER) gain under strong Doppler spreads compared to conventional CP-OFDM. The waveform’s chirp-based structure also enables native compatibility with integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), allowing radar-like sensing without additional resource overhead. Furthermore, AFDM can be integrated into the 3GPP NR architecture through minor modifications to existing FFT/IFFT-based hardware. These results demonstrate that AFDM represents an OFDM-extensible waveform candidate suitable for addressing key 6G requirements including robustness, efficiency, and ISAC integration.
