Wireless Smart Utility Network (Wi-SUN) is an international standard for wireless communication technologies targeting the Internet of Things (IoT), providing a framework that enables low-power, wide-area connectivity. It has already been deployed in over 100 million devices worldwide, particularly in applications such as smart metering. Although the transmission distance between radio devices is typically several hundred meters, large-scale mesh networks can be realized through multi-hop communication. Future deployments are expected across diverse application domains, with increasing demand for longer-distance and higher-speed communication between radios. To meet these requirements, Wi-SUN operation in the Very High Frequency (VHF) band has been institutionalized. However, the outdoor transmission characteristics of SUN FSK and SUN OFDM, currently adopted for Wi-SUN in the VHF band, had been evaluated only with measurement equipment, and validation using actual devices had not yet been conducted. In this study, we developed a SUN OFDM transmission device capable of operating in the VHF band and suitable for commercial use, and conducted outdoor transmission experiments in mobile environments. As a result, transmission distances up to about 10 km were successfully achieved. |
