Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In implantable healthcare systems, sensors are implanted in the human body to collect data and transmit it to external devices. Therefore, continuous operation and reduced charging frequency are directly linked to system reliability. However, implantable sensors must be small and lightweight, which limits battery capacity. To address this issue, we have proposed a backscatter human body communication technique that combines human body communication with the backscatter method used in passive RFID systems. This approach enables battery-free data transmission by modulating and reflecting radio waves radiated by a reader. In this study, we focus on backscatter human body communication between an implantable tag embedded in the abdomen and an external reader. We evaluated whether impedance switching in the implanted tag can enable impedance modulation. The results of electromagnetic field analysis using a numerical human body model indicated that the reader was able to reliably detect impedance variations of the tag even through biological tissues. This finding confirms the feasibility of realizing backscatter communication between implanted and external devices based on impedance modulation.
