[Poster Presentation] Eye Movement Sensing During Eye Closure Using Optical Flow

(in English) Polysomnography (PSG), which is widely used for the diagnosis of sleep disorders, simultaneously records multiple biological signals to evaluate sleep stages. Currently, the determination of sleep stages still relies on manual scoring by medical workers, which requires long hours of analysis, and imposes a significant burden. In addition, the attachment of numerous sensors may interfere with the subject’s natural sleep. Rapid eye movements (REM) occurring during REM sleep are important indicators for classifying sleep stages. To distinguish them from slow eye movements observed during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) or wakefulness, measuring eye movement velocity with closed eyes is required. In this study, as a first step toward non-contact and non-invasive sleep stage estimation, we propose a method for sensing closed-eye movements using optical flow analysis.
