Preliminary Study on Estimating Internal Moisture Content in Wood Using Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar

(in English) In recent years, Japan has seen a declining workforce in occupations requiring plant condition management, such as forestry and agriculture. Consequently, there is a growing demand for operational efficiency. Remote sensing, which enables plant condition management even when personnel are not present on-site, is considered effective. Among these technologies, radar-based sensing is particularly promising. It can rapidly observe large areas and, leveraging its sensitivity to moisture content changes, is thought capable of estimating internal moisture levels within plants. This paper demonstrates, as a fundamental investigation, a relationship between the moisture content within wood and the image reconstruction using data acquired by radar. Wood samples containing internal moisture were used as targets, and data were measured using Circular Synthetic Aperture Radar. The results revealed a correlation between the image reconstruction obtained from the acquired data and the changes in moisture content within the wood.
