Highly Oriented Cholesteric Blue Phase I via Field-induced Phase Transition

(in English) Cholesteric blue phase liquid crystals (BPLCs) exhibit excellent electro-optic responses but are difficult to align due to their three-dimensional structures. In this study, we investigated the BPI reorientation mechanism by utilizing the electric field-induced phase transition mediated by BPX. It was revealed that the BPI orientation is governed by the cooperative effects of the elongated BPX structure stabilized along the electric field, the martensitic-like transformation between BPI and BPX, and the surface anchoring effect. Furthermore, by utilizing this mechanism, precise control of monodomain BPI orientation at low voltages (~2.5 V μm-1) becomes possible, demonstrating its potential for optical device applications.
