Improving the Characteristics of Mode Seeking BicycleGAN -- Quality Improvement of Image and Enhancing Image Diversity by Interactive Evolutionary Computation --

(in English) In line-art colorization by deep learning, it is required to produce diverse and high-quality colorized images from the same input line drawings. Authors proposed before BicycleGAN with mode seeking regularization to obtain more diverse colored images compared with conventional methods. However, this method tends to generate checkerboard artifacts. Moreover, depending on the latent variables, some generated images exhibited poor visual quality or undesirable color tones. In this paper, an improved model of the mode seeking BicycleGAN is proposed by introducing two key extensions: one is an up-sampling structure using bilinear interpolation to enhance image quality, and the other an interactive evolutionary computation (IEC) framework to explore the latent space which reflects the users’ preference to generate diverse and desirable color images. Experimental results demonstrate the high performance of the proposed method.
