We have applied the field emitter array fabrication method to the fabrication of electrospray thrusters in order to increase the thrust density. Electrospray thrusters are mainly composed of emitter and extractor electrodes, using ionic liquid as a propellant. The emitter shape of the emitter arrays fabricated in the previous study varied due to the characteristics of the lithography tool used, and some emitters had large aperture diameters. This resulted in leakage of the ionic liquid propellant, and
ion emission was observed only within a narrow voltage range. In this study, we aimed to suppress the leakage of the ionic liquid propellant and improve the current and operating voltage range by enhancing the uniformity of the emitter array. As a result, the operating voltage range was successfully increased by 4.4 times compared to that of the previous design. In addition, an increase in the negative current and a reduction in the beam interception rate were confirmed. |
