The Effect of Luminance Level on SSVEP Hue Selectivity

(in English) Kaneko et al. (2020) measured SSVEPs elicited by chromatic stimuli on an isoluminant hue circle in the cone-opponent color space, reporting that the responses reflect both cone-opponent and perceptual components. Since the lightness of optimal colors, such as yellow and red, is inherently high or low, we conducted SSVEP measurements using the same methodology as Kaneko et al. (2020) at three different luminance levels, including the isoluminant condition. The results revealed hue selectivity that was asymmetric relative to the cone-opponent axes. Conversely, the notch near the S-axis—a characteristic feature observed in a previous study (Morishita et al., 2024) that presented transient color stimuli (16 hues) at three luminance levels—was not found in the present study. We discuss the implications of these findings.
