Self-initiated attention shifts, an essential component of voluntary cognitive control, remain less explored than externally cued shifts. This study analyzed EEG activity preceding such shifts during a rapid serial visual presentation task performed under self-initiated, instructed, and free-viewing conditions. Participant-specific machine-learning classifiers were trained to distinguish self-initiated from instructed shifts based on pre-shift EEG signals. Classification accuracy exceeded chance across participants, indicating that pre-shift activity contains discriminative information. These findings demonstrate the utility of data-driven, individual-level approaches for identifying neural patterns underlying internally generated attention |
