Analysis of Day-to-Day Variations in Basketball Shooting Motion Using Mediapipe

(in English) Insufficient opportunities for individualized coaching have been identified as a challenge in school sports, and intermediate-level players often exhibit day-to-day variations in their shooting motion depending on their physical condition. This highlights the need for sports training-support systems that account for individual characteristics. In this study, we analyzed how day-to-day variations in basketball shooting motions influence shooting success rates by using three-dimensional skeletal data estimated with MediaPipe. The results showed that, for Participant A, upper-limb release-related variables—such as wrist palmar-flexion angular velocity and elbow extension angular velocity—were strongly associated with daily success rates, whereas for Participant B, lower-limb and trunk variables—such as knee extension velocity and hip joint angle—were the primary determinants of performance. Additionally, upper-limb release characteristics were commonly related to success across both participants. These findings indicate that day-to-day performance fluctuations depend on an individual’s movement style and that the factors influencing shooting success differ between players. This study provides fundamental insights for developing personalized, adaptive AI coaching systems.
