To achieve high-speed and energy-efficient pattern recognition, we design a machine learning system based on a 3f optical system.
The 3f optical system, consisting of lenses and diffractive optical elements, produces focused spots corresponding to an inner product of the input pattern and a constant vector, enabling pattern classification.
We have previously verified that, even in an optical system using an aberrated lens, image classification can be achieved independently of the pattern position, provided that the diffractive optical element operates under ideal conditions.
In this study, refraction on the lenses and scattering/diffraction in the diffractive optical element are simulated using vector electromagnetic field analysis to evaluate the shift invariance with respect to image inputs.
The analysis results confirm that, for an optical system designed for classification of the handwritten digit images, the output spot images hold shift-invariance. |
