A Preliminary Report on Enhancing Viewer Interest in Food Images with Overlay Visual Effects

(in English) This study examines whether adding visual expressions that convey taste impressions to food and beverage images increases viewer interest. We conducted an online user experiment using pairwise comparisons and Likert-type impression ratings. Results indicate that the added visual expressions tended to enhance perceived interest and feelings of excitement or anticipation, and that taste-consistent designs were effective in some categories. The study is exploratory: the stimulus set, the range of visual expressions, and the number of participants were limited, and individual differences were not fully modeled. Despite these constraints, the findings suggest potential applications for behavior change beyond the food domain. Future work will expand the stimulus and design space and develop models to account for individual differences more explicitly.
