Evaluating MP-QUIC with Retransmission Control for Video Streaming and with Network Quality Prediction

(in English) Remote monitoring of autonomous vehicles requires high-quality, low-latency video streaming,
but LTE/5G networks are susceptible to handovers and radio blockage, making it difficult to
maintain stable video quality over a single path. Therefore, multipath transport technologies such
as MP-QUIC have attracted attention.
However, conventional MP-QUIC packet schedulers rely only on measured delay, so they cannot avoid
transient delay increases and tend to concentrate traffic on paths with small propagation delay.
Moreover, conventional retransmission mechanisms ignore the playback buffer duration of video streams,
which wastes bandwidth due to blind retransmissions.

This paper proposes two packet schedulers that exploit throughput prediction
(the ratio scheme and the threshold scheme),
and a retransmission control scheme for video streaming that considers the playback buffer time.
Field trials with real vehicles on public roads show that, compared with a conventional scheme,
the ratio scheme reduces the mean and 90th percentile smoothed round-trip time (SRTT) by about 20% and
improves the packet loss rate by 0.21 percentage points, while the threshold
scheme further improves these SRTT metrics by about 10%, improves the packet loss rate by
0.18 percentage points, and reduces both the number and ratio of video outages by about 30%.
The proposed video-oriented retransmission control also reduces by about 20% the ratio of
retransmitted packets that exceed the playback buffer deadline, demonstrating improvements in
latency, packet loss, and video outages for low-latency video streaming in remote monitoring
of autonomous vehicles.
