Improvement of Power Saving Effect and Latency Reduction in C-DRX Control with Base Station Sleep Control

(in English) In this paper tries to enhance the power saving effect and to suppress the latency increase of connected-mode discontinuous reception (C-DRX) at user equipment (UE) by jointly applying our previously reported probabilistic sleep control at base stations (BSs). C-DRX is a power saving technology on the UE side defined in 3GPP for 5G NR by discontinuous reception. The drawback to C-DRX is an increase in latency. Meanwhile, BS sleep control contributes to the network power saving in general. Most of the existing works investigate C-DRX and BS sleep control individually, but this paper clarifies their combined effects. Intuitively, BS sleep control may degrade C-DRX performance because the number of BSs to which UE can connect is reduced. However, detailed simulation results surprisingly elucidate that our probabilistic BS sleep control enhances the power saving effect at UEs and suppresses the latency increase of C-DRX operation while reducing the power consumption at BSs. This is owing to the intelligent BS sleep control, which considers the system-level throughput or energy efficiency enhancement through the reduction in inter-cell interference by appropriately terminating the transmission at a part of BSs depending on the given UE distribution in the system coverage area.
