Recently, the transition from chewy foods to soft foods has led to concern regarding a decrease in mastication frequency. Lower mastication frequency and rapid eating tend to be associated with a higher BMI. A reduction in mastication frequency can lead to obesity. In addition, negative effects on health such as incomplete development of the jaw and oral diseases have been reported. This indicates that technologies which can evaluate and support proper eating behavior are needed. Conventional methods for evaluating eating and swallowing functions include `Videofluoroscopic swallowing study' and `Repetitive saliva swallowing test'. However, since they require exclusive devices and medical professionals, they are inconvenient for home use. Furthermore, while many previous studies have focused on swallowing sounds, only a few have simultaneously focused on both chewing and swallowing. In this study, we simultaneously measure the pharyngeal motion sounds of chewing and swallowing sounds using only a throat microphone, extract pharyngeal motion sounds through noise reduction and distinguish between chewing and swallowing sounds. The effectiveness of the proposed method was confirmed by experiments using actual observed sound data. |
