An Analysis of Downtime Trends and Causes in OpenAI Services

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In recent years, services based on large language models (LLMs), such as ChatGPT, have rapidly expanded and are now used across many industries, including business automation, finance, and engineering. However, these services still experience intermittent access disruptions, raising concerns not only about degraded user experience but also about economic losses and reduced societal productivity. As dependence on generative AI services grows, enhancing their availability requires a quantitative understanding of outage patterns and operational characteristics. This study aims to systematically analyze outage conditions and obtain fundamental insights for improving service availability. Using the official status information published by OpenAI, we first conduct chronological and structural analyses of overall service availability. Based on these findings, we then design relevant features, construct an outage prediction model, and quantitatively evaluate feature importance. Our analysis confirms five findings:
(1) a tendency for outages to concentrate during working hours; (2) simultaneous failures across multiple services;(3) an increase in outages immediately after new feature releases; (4) differences in outage frequency and recovery time across services; and (5) quantitative validation of factors contributing to availability decline using the feature importance of the prediction model.
