Regionalization of the Global Automotive Trade Network -- The Rise of Integrated Peripheries and Shifting Centers of Gravity --

(in English) This study examines the structural transformation of the global automotive trade network between 2000 and 2022, utilizing international trade data from the WTO TiVA database. The dataset comprises 18 countries that together account for approximately 80% of global automotive exports. Trade values are each country’s domestic value added for foreign final demand. Network analysis based on export–import linkages reveals both the expansion of the trade network and changes in countries’ centrality. The emergence of “integrated peripheries,” such as Mexico and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries, accompanies the relative decline of traditional core nations, including some European countries, and the remarkable rise of China. Overall, the analysis reveals that the architecture of the global automotive value chain has evolved from a Western-centered, globally integrated structure to a regionally modular system, driven by the rise of China, ASEAN, and other emerging economies.
