A Lightweight and Calibration-Free Path Loss Exponent Estimator with RSSI and Anchor Spacing

(in English) Indoor location estimation using model-based RSSI techniques relies predominantly on the estimation of Path Loss Exponent (PLE). Calibration of the PLE is typically performed to achieve accuracy. However, the PLE can vary over time due to environmental changes such as the movement of objects or people, making frequent recalibration impractical. While machine learning and complex computational methods can adapt to these changes, they may not be practical for use on mobile devices. Therefore, we propose a lightweight and calibration-free PLE estimator with easily available Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) and distance between anchor devices. To evaluate the proposed method, we used simulation and measurement data to calculate the error in estimated distance from anchor devices, and the error in estimated location employing the well-known trilateration scheme.
