(in English) International submarine cables constitute a critical infrastructure that supports the majority of Japan’s international communications and is indispensable for social and economic activities. In recent years, the rapid increase in traffic driven by technologies such as generative AI has accelerated plans for new deployments and capacity expansions. At the same time, submarine cables face risks such as natural disasters and physical damage, and growing geopolitical tensions have heightened attention to their role in economic security. This presentation outlines the processes involved in the planning, construction, operation, and maintenance of international submarine cables, and discusses key challenges and future prospects, including considerations for safety and reliability.
