(in English) The development of nuclear cataracts has been suggested to be associated with thermal load on the crystalline lens. Despite the generally low ambient temperature, a relatively high incidence rate of nuclear cataract has been reported in Iceland; one possible contributing factor is the widespread sauna-bathing culture in Nordic countries. However, the thermal load imposed on the crystalline lens under sauna conditions has not yet been quantitatively evaluated. In this study, we computed the temperature and thermal load of the crystalline lens under sauna conditions using an anatomical human model. Furthermore, we incorporated a cold-water immersion scenario to compare its effects and investigate whether post-sauna cooling influences lens thermal load and the potential risk of nuclear cataract formation by a model-based approach.
