Influence of Foot Posture Changes on the Sense of Vection in the Unstable Swing Phenomenon

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study investigated the environmental dependency of the "acceleration illusion," where the action of lifting the feet triggers a subjective increase in movement speed under constant optical flow. A comparative experiment using an immersive Head-Mounted Display (HMD) and a 300-inch large screen revealed that the illusion occurrence rate exceeded 80% in both environments, with no statistically significant difference observed. Furthermore, no significant difference was found in perceptual latency, indicating that the phenomenon occurs stably regardless of the device's physical characteristics, provided a sufficient field of view is ensured. In conclusion, this phenomenon suggests that the change in body state—specifically the loss of ground contact—strongly influences visual speed perception.
