Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) In Japan, the VHF band is gaining attention as a key communication infrastructure for ensuring reliable mass broadcasting during disasters. Within the VHF band, the frequency range from 90 MHz to 108 MHz, known as the V-Low band, is also allocated for FM broadcast waves in South Korea. One factor degrading signal quality in Japan's VHF band is interference from long-distance propagation originating in South Korea, known as duct propagation, which is caused by atmospheric conditions. Numerous studies have been conducted to elucidate the mechanism behind duct propagation, aiming to support various applications including proper broadcasting operations. While research has particularly focused on clarifying the relationship between atmospheric conditions causing atmospheric refraction inversions, known as radio ducts, and radio waves, the relationship between atmospheric conditions observed at both VHF band transmission and reception sites and duct propagation remains unclear. This study evaluated the long-term relationship between radio duct occurrence near and around transmission and reception sites and the received power at the reception site. This revealed the influence of atmospheric conditions at both the transmission and reception sides on duct propagation. Specifically, it was found that, compared with the transmitting side, the occurrence of radio ducts and the increase in received power at the receiving side were correlated, and that radio ducts in the vicinity and in the northeastern area of the receiving site affected the increase in received power.
