Time-resolved FT-IR observation of polyurea polymerization and hydrogen bonding process within one second

(in English) Polyurea and its derivatives exhibit excellent physical and chemical properties owing to intermolecular hydrogen bonding. In this study, polyurea formation via the polyaddition reaction between diamines and diisocyanates was investigated in situ using fast time-resolved Fourier-transform infrared attenuated total reflectance (FTIR–ATR) spectroscopy, enabling analysis of the reaction within 1 s. Polyurea was polymerized on an ATR prism using aliphatic and cycloaliphatic diamines and diisocyanates under rapid-scan FT-IR measurements, allowing kinetic analysis based on changes in the ATR spectra. Furthermore, spectral analysis focusing on intermolecular hydrogen bond formation revealed differences in hydrogen-bonding behavior arising from variations in molecular structure.
