In fifth-generation (5G) and beyond mobile communication systems, high-frequency bands such as millimeter-wave and sub-terahertz bands are being explored to enhance system throughput. However, severe propagation loss at high frequencies, together with strict constraints on transmit power and antenna size at user terminals, poses significant challenges. To address these issues, this paper investigates beamfocusing in cooperative transmission among user terminals, where multiple cooperating terminals are located in the near-field region of a base station (BS) equipped with a phase-only controlled phased array. First, we formulate the phase design for both the terminals and the BS array under the assumption that terminal locations are known. We then extend our analysis to a practical scheme in which terminal locations are estimated. A coarse estimation of the terminal positions is performed using a positioning system such as GPS. Based on this coarse estimate, a method for refined position estimation is developed, through which the phases of the terminals and the BS phased array are determined. Simulation results demonstrate that our cooperative transmission scheme with three terminals achieves approximately 3 dB improvement in received power at the BS compared with the single-terminal case. |
