The importance of millimeter-wave technology in the fields of communications and sensing is increasing, and there is a demand for devices with higher performance, lower power consumption, smaller size, and lower cost. Liquid crystals used as display materials exhibit relatively large dielectric anisotropy, refractive index anisotropy, and electro-optic effects in the millimeter-wave and microwave regions. Applications of liquid crystals to control devices in these regions have been attempted. Artificial structures with subwavelength-scale microstructures are known to exhibit unique properties for specific electromagnetic frequencies. Since millimeter waves have wavelengths of several millimeters, the basic elements composing these artificial structures are approximately several hundred micrometers in size, making them possible to fabricate using typical machining processes. This presentation introduces the use of conductive polymers, 3D printers, and milling machines for the development of millimeter-wave control devices utilizing liquid crystals. |
