This paper investigates the reception performance of 16QAM signals using an array antenna equipped with 1-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs). The evaluation is based on mutual information under line-of-sight (LOS) and non–line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. Unlike previous studies that assumed NLOS environment, this work considers LOS environments and analyzes the impact of signal arrival direction. Results show that, even at high SNR, mutual information does not reach the theoretical maximum of 4 bits for 16QAM, saturating at approximately 3.5 bits. Moreover, in LOS scenarios, performance can degrade to 2 bits for certain arrival directions, revealing a strong direction dependency. Conventional approaches such as threshold adjustment and constellation redesign fail to fully resolve this issue. To overcome this limitation, we propose introducing random phase shifts to each antenna element, which effectively eliminates direction dependency. Furthermore, combining phase randomization with threshold adjustment achieves performance close to the theoretical limit of 4 bits regardless of arrival direction. |
