Mathematical structure of sensory cortical modulation in Mental Disorders

(in English) In this study, we mathematically analyzed how reduced inhibitory neural mechanisms reported in mental disorders affect the spatiotemporal dynamics of cortical activity. A model cortex was constructed using a neural mass model composed of excitatory and inhibitory neuronal populations, and the inhibitory synaptic strength was varied as a control parameter. As inhibition decreased, cortical activity patterns transitioned from traveling wave–like dynamics to irregular hole-like structures and eventually to a spatially homogeneous high-potential state. In addition, both the dominant frequency components of cortical activity and the spatial propagation properties of responses to external stimuli depended on the level of inhibition, with coherent stimulus propagation observed only under conditions corresponding to the healthy state.
