While massive public neuroscience datasets have become available, the human cost of hypothesis generation and data analysis has also increased, creating a bottleneck in neuroscience research. In this study, we built an AI agent, “AI Neuroscientist,” that autonomously performs an end-to-end workflow—from generating and evaluating research ideas to generating and executing analysis code—given a dataset and a research objective as input. By comparing ideas produced by human researchers (Experts/Students) and multiple large language models (LLMs), we found that the distribution of ideas depends on the generating model, and that although the overall quality does not reach the Expert level, it can approach a level comparable to Students. Furthermore, as a case study, we demonstrate that AI Neuroscientist can automatically complete the full analysis pipeline for one of its proposed research themes—including implementing and executing the analysis, statistical inference, and visualization—and that the proposed research idea can be empirically evaluated through real-data analysis. |
