Macroscale transient dynamics reflected in electrocorticography (ECoG) originate from the interacting population activity between excitatory (E) and inhibitory (I) neurons. Maintaining an appropriate balance of such interactions (E/I balance) is crucial for understanding the neural mechanisms in the brain. Recent studies suggest that E/I imbalance is involved in the pathological mechanisms of motor impairments after spinal cord injury (SCI); however, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we applied a neural-mass-model-based tracking for E/I balance changes using ECoG signals obtained from monkeys’ SCI model. The estimated E/I balance is evaluated to reveal the mechanisms underlying recovery of motor dysfunction by comparing the E/I changes between before and after injury.We found that movement-related E/I balance changes are differentiated between reaching and grasping, suggesting underlying mechanisms are task-dependent. |
