In recent years, studies on brain–computer interfaces have reported attempts to directly decode words from brain activity, and methods based on non-invasive measurements such as electroencephalography (EEG) are increasingly required.In this study, we investigated word classification using EEG signals measured during imagined speech. Unlike conventional approaches that assume repeated utterances, this study focused on single utterances to examine the feasibility of a more natural communication method. In the experiment, EEG signals were recorded during single overt speech, single imagined speech, and repeated imagined speech, and the results under these conditions were compared. Participants were instructed to utter five Japanese words according to auditory cues. The results of five-class classification using deep learning showed that relatively high classification accuracy was achieved under the overt speech condition, whereas the accuracy under the imagined speech condition remained at the chance level. |
