A Proposal for an Analytical Method of Collaborative Ethnography Based on the Level of Abstraction in Dialogue

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) Collaborative ethnography is characterized by multiple participants jointly conducting investigation and analysis. Collaborative ethnography enables multilayered understanding by revealing differences in participants’ perspectives. However, its evaluation often relies on qualitative analysis. To address this limitation, this study proposes a quantitative method for analyzing the process of collaborative ethnography. Specifically, this study adopts a quantitative approach that examines collaborative ethnography through the abstraction levels assigned to nouns in dialogue, and analyzes processes of concretization and abstraction in the process of collaborative ethnography. Applying the method to real ethnographic data suggests that decreases in abstraction reflect supplemental descriptions of observations, whereas increases correspond partly to interpretive statements
