In bat echolocation, it has been suggested that the first-spike latency (FSL)—defined as the latency of the first spike evoked by an echo, measured relative to the timing of the bat’s own call emission—encodes relative target location. However, because spike generation in cochlear neurons is inherently stochastic, FSL exhibits temporal variability, and it remains unclear how such unstable temporal information is processed in the auditory central pathway. In this study, we constructed a spiking neural network model that mimics monaural processing and binaural integration from the cochlea to the auditory center, and quantitatively analyzed the variability of FSL distributions across frequency channels. Through this analysis, we investigate how stochastic spike-code fluctuations originating in auditory periphery may be transformed and reconstructed by central processing, thereby contributing to a better understanding of temporal coding mechanisms in the auditory system. |
