Surface electromyography (sEMG) is a non-invasive technique for electrically measuring muscle activity. Detailed analysis of muscle activity requires examination of the activity of motor units constituting the muscle. Therefore, we have developed a method for extracting motor unit action potential waveforms from surface electromyographic signals. For noise reduction in weak sEMG signals, it is commonly reasonable to determine a detection threshold under the assumption that signals recorded during muscle relaxation consist almost entirely of noise. While this assumption is generally valid, it becomes inappropriate when the presence or absence of abnormal motor unit firing during muscle relaxation must be evaluated, as in examinations for neuromuscular disorders. This paper proposes a threshold-setting method that enables the detection of motor unit activity in surface electromyographic signals recorded during muscle relaxation. The thresholds determined by the proposed method are also applicable to the detection of motor unit activity during normal muscle contractions. |
