Effects of Different Stimulus Background Features on SSVEP Responses

Abstract (in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
(in English) This study aimed to apply steady-state visual evoked potentials (SSVEPs) for brain-computer interface (BCI) in metaverse environments, investigating the effects of background color and luminance of flashing stimuli on SSVEP responses. Conventional SSVEP research is often conducted under uniform background conditions, leaving the impact of dynamically changing visual environments—such as those in the metaverse—insufficiently clarified. This study employed visual stimuli flashing at 6, 15, 20, and 30 Hz. SSVEP measurements were taken under eight background conditions combining background color (red, green, blue, yellow) and background luminance (light, dark). Changes in SSVEP power were evaluated using frequency analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA) on the measured EEG data. Results showed that 15 Hz stimuli elicited the strongest SSVEP responses across all background conditions, exhibiting minimal dependence on background color or luminance. Conversely, SSVEP responses to 6 Hz stimuli showed luminance dependence under green and yellow backgrounds. Both background color and luminance dependence of SSVEP responses were frequency-dependent. Since both green and yellow backgrounds contain green, this effect is likely mediated by the luminance-sensitive visual M pathway. Based on the above, when using SSVEP within the metaverse, stimuli at 15 Hz or higher show less dependence on background color and luminance. Stimuli around 15 Hz are particularly optimal for achieving stable BCI control under diverse visual conditions, while stimuli around 6 Hz require consideration of background color and luminance.
