Red blood cell suspensions subjected to shear flow formed between concentric rotating cylinders (Couette flow) may exhibit anisotropy in the backscatter coefficient (BSC) depending on the ultrasound incidence angle. In this study, ultrasound data acquired in the 22--40~MHz frequency range under Couette flow were analyzed to evaluate the dependence of BSC on the incidence angle $beta$. For all shear rate conditions (shear rate; SR = 10, 31.6, and 100~s$^{-1}$), the BSC exhibited a U-shaped dependence on $beta$, reaching a minimum near $beta approx 90^circ$, where the ultrasound propagation direction is perpendicular to the flow. In particular, for SR = 31.6--100~s$^{-1}$, the anisotropy amplitude $Deltamathrm{BSC}$ reached approximately 4--6~dB. Furthermore, the U-shaped angular dependence of the BSC was consistently observed even when the depth of the region of interest (ROI) used for BSC estimation was varied. Without attenuation correction, deeper ROIs yielded lower BSC values, whereas attenuation correction substantially suppressed the depth dependence. Since the degree of angular dependence was independent of whether attenuation correction was applied, these results suggest that the observed anisotropy is not primarily attributable to attenuation effects. |
