Enhancing the power transfer capability of free-space optical power transmission requires the realization of high-power laser beams. However, power scaling using fiber amplification is limited by nonlinear effects such as stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS). To overcome these limitations and achieve higher optical output, we have been developing a coherent beam combining (CBC) technique that spatially combines multiple laser beams. To mitigate SBS-induced constraints in CBC systems, we propose a “hybrid modulation” approach that combines (i) high-speed phase modulation of the laser light using a pseudo-random binary sequence (PRBS) to broaden the optical spectrum and increase the SBS threshold, and (ii) multi-dither phase synchronization, in which small, distinct frequency dithers are applied to each beam, allowing phase separation and detection using a single photodetector. This paper presents experimental results of the proposed method. PRBS phase modulation (up to 28.2 Gbps, PN7) effectively broadened the optical spectrum, and the SBS threshold increased with the bit rate (e.g., for 10 Gbps, the onset of backscattering was observed around an input power of +20 dBm). Furthermore, for hybrid-modulated light simulating multiple dither frequencies, phase noise suppression was demonstrated by extracting target beat components through bandpass filtering and applying phase synchronization control. These results confirm that the proposed approach can relax the SBS limitation and enable scalable coherent beam combining. |
