Wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) technology is currently introduced as a method for expanding the transmission capacity of optical fiber links. To achieve further capacity expansion, mode division multiplexing (MDM) technology is drawing attention. The simultaneous deployment of these two multiplexing technologies makes multiplicative multiplexing possible. However, many of the coupling elements currently investigated as multiplexers/demultiplexers (MUX/DEMUX) for MDM links exhibit high wavelength dependence, which presents a challenge for combination with WDM. In this research, a taper structured core in a polymer waveguides is designed through simulation analysis to reduce the wavelength dependence of mode coupling between two adjacent cores. A directional coupler-type polymer waveguide device is subsequently fabricated using the Mosquito method. As a result, the successful fabrication of a waveguide that exhibits a high coupling ratio, low loss, and low wavelength dependence (in the O-band) between single-mode and few-mode cores is achieved. |
