Design of a Low-Grating-Lobe SIW Endfire Interpolating Fed Phased Array in 300 GHz Band

(in English) An SIW endfire antenna phased array with interpolating element was designed in 300-GHz band. Endfire antennas have narrow bandwidth because impedance matching at the radiating aperture is difficult. Each array element antenna achieves broad bandwidth by incorporating a stepped impedance matching structure inside the SIW, taking the advantage of multilayer substrate. In 300 GHz band, the RF feeding circuit size limits dense element spacing, causing grating-lobes. In proposed antenna, interpolating fed technique is employed, in which the interpolating element is excited by coupling from the feeding elements and radio waves are radiated both from the feeding and interpolating elements. By coupling to the interpolating element, radio waves are radiated not only from the feeding elements but also from the interpolating element. This effectively halves the radiating element spacing and suppresses grating-lobes even when the feeding elements spacing exceeds one wavelength in free space.
