Magnetic blowing-out of break arcs using an electrical contact equipped with resistors for shortening arc length before arc extinguishing

(in English) Electrical contacts with a fixed cathode made of a silver cylindrical rod and a movable contact with resistors are separated at a constant separating speed of 1.0 m/s in a 300 VDC/10 A resistive circuit to generate break arcs. Transverse magnetic field is applied to the break arcs, and the anode spots are induced to the electrode via the resistor-equipped electrode. The arc duration D of the break arcs and the arc length L at arc extinction are analyzed, and the relationships with the resistance value Rx of the resistors are reported. The resistance value Rx of the resistors mounted on the movable contact are changed from 1 Ω to 100 Ω. The magnetic flux density By of the transverse magnetic field is set to 20 mT, 60 mT, and 100 mT. Following results are shown. For all values of By, no dependence of D on Rx is observed. For all values of By, the L decreases as the Rx is increased.
